T4G began as a friendship between four pastors. These friends differed on a number of theological issues, like baptism and the charismatic gifts. But they were committed to standing together for the main thing—the gospel of Jesus Christ. So they began a conference which occurs every two years and aims at encouraging other pastors and church leaders to do the same—to stand together for the gospel.

The four long-time friends, Mark Dever, Ligon Duncan, C. J. Mahaney, and Albert Mohler, also invited several of their friends to speak which included John MacArthur, John Piper, and R. C. Sproul among others.

Sound Doctrine Part 1 and Part 2 were delivered by Ligon Duncan who is the senior minister of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Mississippi, and also a professor of theology at Reformed Theological Seminary. He is the Chairman of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood and is currently the moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America.
